The pop superstar carried a symbolic daisy and sang “What a Wonderful World” during the historic suborbital journey alongside Gayle King and others.
(TEXAS, USA – April 14, 2025) – Global music icon Katy Perry successfully journeyed to the edge of space and back today aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, part of the company’s groundbreaking first all-female crewed mission. Landing safely in Texas, Perry shared the profound meaning behind her flight, which included carrying a special tribute to her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, and a poignant song choice celebrating our planet.
The mission, which also included journalist Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, astronaut Amanda Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, lasted approximately 10.5 minutes. The New Shepard capsule reached an apogee of 350,449 feet above mean sea level (MSL), equivalent to 107 kilometers, taking the crew well beyond the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space.
Upon returning, Perry revealed she carried a simple daisy flower into space. “I feel super connected to love,” she explained, linking the flower directly to her 4-year-old daughter, Daisy, whom she shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom. Both Bloom and young Daisy, clad in her own astronaut costume, watched the launch and landing.
Perry elaborated on the daisy’s symbolism: “Daisies are common flowers, but they grow through any condition… They are resilient. They are powerful, they are strong… it’s also a reminder of our beautiful Earth.”
Choosing to sing Louis Armstrong’s classic “What a Wonderful World” during the flight wasn’t about self-promotion, Perry emphasized. “It’s not about me… it’s about a collective energy… it’s about us, it’s about making space for future women and taking up space and belonging, and it’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it,” she stated. “This is all for the benefit of Earth.”
Describing the emotional weight of the journey, Perry called the spaceflight experience “second to being a mom.” She acknowledged the difficulty of leaving her daughter, saying, “That’s all my love right there, and I have to surrender and trust that the universe is going to take care of me… I wanted to model courage, worthiness and fearlessness.”
Before the flight, Perry had hinted at bringing style to the final frontier, joking with Elle magazine, “Space is going to finally be glam… We are going to put the ‘ass’ in astronaut.”
The successful NS-25 mission marks another significant step for Blue Origin and the burgeoning space tourism industry, highlighted by its first all-female crew and the participation of high-profile figures like Katy Perry and Gayle King, further blending pop culture with space exploration
